Pakistan Institute of Development Economics was established at Karachi in 1957 and in 1964 accorded the status of an autonomous research organization by the Government of Pakistan. It is devoted to theoretical and empirical research in Development Economics in general and on Pakistan-related economic issues in particular.
The Institute also acts as a country-wide agency for conducting and promoting research, surveys, seminars, experiments and demonstrations in the fields of Economics, Demography, Social Anthropology and related social science disciplines.
PIDE has started Ph.D. program in September 2000. PIDE currently has four departments, namely; Department of Economics, Department of Econometrics and statistics, Department of population studies, and Department of Business Studies. The organization soon plans to introduce more disciplines and aims to become trend setters in the way knowledge of social sciences is being departed. It also provides training in economic analysis, research methods and project evaluation.
