Duration: 1.5 YEARS

Project Summary The overarching objective of the project is to provide support to enhance knowledge management capacity for African Policy Research Institutes and networks with a particular focus on tackling the issues of poverty and hunger within the global Millennium Development Goals framework. It will seek to strengthen multi-disciplinary research capacity on poverty analysis and contribute to bridging the gap between research and policy on poverty reduction and sustainable development. More specifically, the project aims to do the following:
- contribute to a capacity building strategy of support to public policy research institutes in Africa, with particular attention to those associated with universities as well as research networks linked to them;
- support the strengthening of multidisciplinary research capacity to advance development and alleviate poverty;
- forge institution-based links between researchers that analyze poverty and development as well as form strengthen formal networks of social scientists affiliated to policy research institutes;
- enhance the systematic dissemination of knowledge on poverty and development issues to the public and to policymakers.
About the Project
Public policy institutes were selected while paying special attention to:
- potential for strengthening the participating institution,
- extent to which the proposal builds teams of social scientists
- emphasis given to building links with the policy-making community and where feasible with strengthening applied research capacities for those not formally in the institute.
The total budget of this project is $1,000,000, funded entirely by the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Bureau for Development Policy (BDP) and Regional Bureau for Africa (RBA). The project will run for approximately 18 months, from March 2008 – August 2009. GDN is the implementing agency with support from AERC. It is the first collaborative research effort between GDN and an RNP.
